Business Briefs: Walnut pruning seminar slated

A demonstration of pruning hedgerows and conventionally planted walnut trees will be part of the Walnut Pruning Field Meeting conducted by University of California farm advisers and specialists.

The meeting is slated from 9:30 a.m. to noon March 6 at the Nickels Soil Lab in Arbuckle.

In the event of rain, the meeting will be at the same time March 13.

Tara Brocker in ag leadership class

Rice farmer Tara Brocker of Nicolaus is one of 10 Farm Bureau leaders in the state taking part in the 2012 Leadership Farm Bureau class.

Brocker is also second vice president of the Yuba-Sutter Farm Bureau.

The yearlong program includes instruction in various subjects including speaking, public relations, political advocacy and personal development.

During the year, the class members also participate in an advocacy trip to Washington, D.C., and trips to San Joaquin County and Texas.

 

Cattle health workshop scheduled in Maxwell

A winter animal-health meeting about beef cattle is scheduled in Maxwell, co-sponsored by the University of California Cooperative Extension.

The meeting is slated from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Maxwell Inn, 81 Oak St., Maxwell.

Lunch, at 1:15 p.m., is courtesy of Merk Animal Health and Boehringer Ingelheim.

Lowe's raising funds for muscular dystrophy

Lowe's stores in the Sacramento area are helping raise funds in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association for the sixth consecutive year.

Customers can take part in the campaign by purchasing and signing $1 green, $5 gold or $20 platinum shamrock mobiles through March 31.

The purchased shamrocks are used to decorate the stores' walls or are in displays.

In 2011, the Lowe's Shamrocks campaign in greater Sacramento and northern Nevada raised more than $107,000.
